How to Rotate PDF Pages That Scanned Sideways

Anyone who's scanned a stack of paper documents has run into this: most pages come out fine, but one or two land sideways or upside down, usually because a page was fed into the scanner facing the wrong way. Rotating it back is a two-minute fix, not a reason to re-scan anything.

Why this happens

Scanners capture whatever orientation the paper was in — they don't know which way is "up" for a page of text. If a document was fed landscape when the rest were portrait, or someone loaded a page backward, that page saves rotated while everything around it looks normal. Multi-page scans are especially prone to this since it's easy not to notice one wrong page in a batch of fifty.

Does rotating affect quality?

If pages are also out of order

Rotation only fixes orientation — it doesn't reorder pages. If your scan also has pages in the wrong sequence, you'll want to combine rotating with the Merge PDF tool (split the file into individual pages, reorder, then merge back together) or handle reordering with a Split PDF pass first.

A quick tip for future scans

If you're scanning regularly, most scanner software has an auto-rotate or auto-orientation-detection setting buried in its preferences. Turning it on catches most sideways pages automatically, so you'll need this fix less often — but for the ones that slip through, it takes seconds either way.
